PERIDOT – Created for Victory

The King James translation calls this stone emerald, however, there is compelling evidence that it is actually peridot. Some translations call this gemstone Olivine, which is a more accurate term for the Peridot gemstone. There are many historical documents indicating the presence of peridot jewelry in Egypt during the time of the exodus. Ancient writings, however, call this gemstone the Evening Emerald because it was mined at night on an Egyptian island in the Red Sea. The island’s exact whereabouts were a mystery for several centuries until it was rediscovered in 1905. Navigators found it difficult to find as it was often shrouded in an impenetrable thick fog. In rabbinical and Egyptian writings, the description is that of a yellow-olive green color. Western history claims that Cleopatra had emerald jewelry; however, the jewelry that has been documented in Egypt shows these green gemstones to actually be peridot.

Peridot is assigned to the tribe of Naphtali, the 6th son of Jacob. His name means to “win through wrestling”. In short, victory.

Interesting tidbits:

  1. Peridot and Victory both have 7 letters. 7 represents the Spirit of God. Victory comes through the Spirit of God.

  2. Peridot in the term of emerald is mentioned in the bible 6 times. Now, remember, this is the 6th stone in the breastplate.

  • But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 15:57

  • For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:4
